Cavalier Altitude

The Virginia Cavaliers - 2006 Men's Lacrosse National Champions.

Virginia spanked Massachusetts 15-7 yesterday to earn the program's fourth national title and the third for coach Dom Starsia. Virginia jumped out to a 4-1 first quarter lead on the underdog Minutemen, but just as they did on Saturday against Syracuse, the Cavs lost their way a bit in the second quarter. UMass fought back to trail just 5-4 at the half.

With a quick goal in the third quarter, UMass tied things up at 5-5. That was the spark. Instead of freezing up at the possibility of being upset in their final game, Virginia exploded, outscoring UMass 10-2 the rest of the way for a relatively easy win. Had they not gone to a delay game in the final 3-4 minutes, the final score could have been even more lopsided.

The first half stayed tight largely due to Virginia's settling for outside shots and some outstanding saves by goalie Doc Schneider. While UVA attacked the goal relentlessly against Syracuse, they looked impatient against the Minutemen's more structured defense. It's tough to beat a hot goalie while standing and firing from 15 yards away and so the Cavs were held to just 5 goals in the first 30 minutes despite taking a ton of shots.

In the second half, Virginia did a better job of hitting cutters and Schneider cooled off a bit. A few easy goals, a few long range cranks hitting the twine - ballgame.

On the other end of the field, UVA defenseman Michael Culver completely shut down UMass stud attackman Sean Morris. In the pregame, Morris got most of the attention from the media. He was the odds-on favorite to be named national player of the year and his play was generally credited with beating Maryland in Saturday's semifinal. Morris' line against Culver - no goals, two assists and only four shots (one of which came after Culver had been pulled late in the game). Virginia decided to have Culver deny Morris the ball and the ploy worked, frustrating Morris and stagnating the UMass offense.

With their final 17-0 record, Virginia completed the best won-loss record in college lacrosse history. Given that, it's natural to discuss where this team ranks among the all-time best teams. For me, it's tough to say for certain where they fall, but they are definitely not the best team ever. I went to the 1989 final four and watched Syracuse win the title behind the Gait twins, Paul and Gary. That team was awesome. The Gaits were college lacrosse's equivalent of Michael Jordan in his prime - just absolutely dominant and doing things that others simply had never thought of - and there were two of them! The Gaits returned the next season and that 1990 Orangemen team was even more dominant than the one I watched (although they later had to vacate that title).

Two thoughts I had after watching the game - first, it was great to see ESPN bring their first-class production to the game. I'm used to watching lacrosse games with only a couple of cameras. If you didn't see a play correctly with the view they had, you were stuck. But not this weekend. ESPN had the hi-def cameras there (which I unfortunately couldn't enjoy) and they had every angle covered. It was a lot of fun to use my TiVo to play goals back with the different views to see how and where guys popped open and to see just where the ball slipped by the keeper.

The other observation I had was that Virginia almost never bounced their shots. That blew my mind. When I played, the coach would scream at you if you took a direct shot without bouncing it. If you shot straight in, it better get by the keeper or you were gonna get yelled at. I wonder if that's a change in philosophy overall, something that Dom Starsia teaches, or just a strategy employed against the goalies this weekend. Come to think of it though, I didn't see a lot of bounced shots from anyone. Maybe the game has just changed that way, but I don't really understand why. A well placed bounced shot can be damn tough to defend.

Pretty dominating weekend by the Cavs. After their first round game vs. ND, I didn't think they'd roll through like they did.

Couple things on your post: you said about the early stages of the UMass game (final) that UVA was "settling for outside shots". I was able to watch four of their games this season, and that's their game ... they weren't "settling". I think the only reason they're able to get away with it, is the fact that just about ANYONE they had on the offensive end of the field could shoot it. At one point during the semi vs. SU, NINE different players had scored (I think they had 14 on the board at the time). That's just unheard of, especially in a national semi-final!

They pretty much did the same thing against Syracuse though ... surprised you felt they "attacked the goal relentlessly against Syracuse". That was actually one of my several frustration points during that game ... you can't give up that many outside shots without making an adjustment. The worst example of that I saw was the Georgetown game ... shit, UVA was hitting shots from the restraining line!

Not taking anything at all away from Virginia ... they obviously had way too much firepower to overcome ... but SU just didn't make the game of it they should/could have. There early season problems (1-4 start) was largely due to not taking care of the ball. They lost waaay too many possessions Saturday by not moving the ball on offense and just trying too much one-on-one isolation crap when it just wasn't there. The other problem that also came back to just seal the deal was clears. Hell, UVA wasn't even riding on several that they just totally botched!! Uuuuggghhh!!

I was wondering if they felt they should give someone else a chance who doesn't get there as often as them?! ;-) Ha!

SU in the late 80's with the Gaits: Hell yeah, glad to hear the acknowledgement from a non-SU person. Not only were the Gaits there, but their supporting casts back then would have lead any other team in the country: Zulberti and Mirachek are two of the standouts who were somewhat overshadowed by Paul and Gary.

ESPN Coverage: I agree, the last three years, they've taken it to a different level. Probably getting better too ... they covered every game of this tourney on ESPNU.
The only problem I have with their whole package is Kessenich!! Damn ... he's the Billy Packer of lacrosse! You think he likes Syracuse?! I guess I can understand his frustrations there ... DENIED!! Ha! What an ass!

Bounce shots: Only seems to still be prevalent on turf. They actually have that new (more grass-like) style of turf in the Dome now, and you don't even see then bouncing shots on that.
I think part of it is the velocity on the shots any more ... just don't need the bounce. You may have noticed that a couple of the shots they clocked were in the 90mph range even when the player was on the move. Most of these guys are mid-high 90's when they're able to plant.

I guess that's it ... another lax season blew by in a blink. Looking forward to next season already. Haven't seen the schedule yet, but I'm sure UVA and 'Cuse will face off again early in the season, as always! Will be interesting to see what the Dookies decide in the coming weeks too.

Yeah, you're right about the outside shots. I should have been more precise. Against Syracuse, UVA took a lot of outside shots as well, but usually when they were wide open (often the result of a drive and dish) and they were able to step into it. Against UMass, it seemed like they took a bunch while standing still, right around defensemen. UMass got their sticks on a lot of those shots.

Also, sorry Mark, but Syracuse's goalie sucked out loud in that game. Virginia scored 8 goals before he made a single save. When you're in that situation, a few outside cranks are justified. Hell, they're a lot of fun to take!

I was also very disappointed with Syracuse's defense, particularly in the first quarter. Several times, they let UVA's middies waltz down the middle unchecked. I don't understand how you can make mistakes like that against the top offense in the country in a national semifinal. By the time they got their heads in the game, they were down seven goals.

But nonetheless, like you said, it probably didn't matter. Virginia just had so many weapons and they played so well together. While a few guys like Matt Ward and Matt Poskay scored a bunch of goals, it wasn't like they had the ball in their sticks all the time. They moved the ball well and seemed comfortable with any of about a dozen guys shooting. It's damn hard to stop an offense like that.

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention was just how good Virginia's faceoff man was. It seemed like when there wasn't an illegal procedure penalty, Virginia won 80% of the faceoffs. In finals, Kessinich was going on and on about UMass' faceoff man with the long stick, while Virginia's guy (Morrissey?) was taking 7 of 9 in the decisive third quarter.

Like I said, Quint's an ass! He's still bitter about being an outstanding all-american goalie for a team with a lot of history, yet who possesses NO HARDWARE! Had to frustrate him that much more when Hop finally broke out and won another one!

Ha! Coluccini ('Cuse goalie) couldn't have caught a cold in that first quarter!! Early in the second quarter, I actually yelled to the Mrs. in the other room that he had actually MADE A SAVE!

And you're right about the D in general ... UMass did much of the same in the third quarter of their game ... nobody was stopping the ball across mid-field. I believe UVA's face-off man had at least one goal in each of their tourney games!

All this stuff is what SU struggled with early (in the season). I really think they just let the hype get to them and they fell back into their early season tendencies. They actually played a better overall game vs UVA in the regular season.

As you said though ... none of this really mattered. If UVA needed to score 25 to win, I think they would have come up with it!

You should check some comments I made in the other thread while watching that Virginia-Syracuse game - http://www.davesez.com/mb/viewtopic.php?t=59

just looked at that thread ... who the hell is cdoug? "Umass is ALWAYS ranked in the top 25. And almost always makes the tourney as an at large team. They are without question a traditional college lacrosse powerhouse, and probably one of the top 10-15 programs in lacrosse."
UMass didn't make the tourney twice since 2000 alone, and was only seeded twice! Top 10-15 program? Hmmm ....
