The Greatest Ever
You hear the expression "in your wildest dreams, you never could have imagined it" a lot and it's rarely true. I mean, like Han Solo, I can imagine a lot. Well, last Saturday's 30-0 Wake Forest win over Florida State in Tallahassee absolutely qualifies. Seriously, even your most die-hard, longtime Deacon backers couldn't have dreamed that. Sure, it was easy to imagine stealing a win down there - that would have been awesome! - but that dream probably involved some tight game with some big plays at the end. No way, no how, does anyone ever imagine shutting out Florida State.
If you consider the teams involved, the one program that is so far on top of the ACC's historical rankings and the other that is so far at the bottom, and considering that FSU hadn't been shut out in 17 years - 30 years on their own field - and considering that the final margin was 38 points off of Vegas' prediction, I think that game qualifies as the most amazing result I've seen in ACC football in the 20+ years I've been paying attention. It wasn't the most important game; that was either the 1990 Georgia Tech win over #1 Virginia when Tech went on to win the national championship (can you believe that? Two different ACC teams ranked #1 in the same year and neither were from Florida.) or the huge 1995 Virginia win over Florida State that showed the ACC that the Seminoles, like the Predator, bled and therefore could be killed.
So go on you Deacon fans. Celebrate! Even if the rest of the world isn't paying attention, those of use who really know see what your team is doing. They're living the dream.

11/13/2006 01:42 pm I was 30 minutes behind on tivo, it was 3-0 Wake. One clicked to the present and it was 20-0, and my eyes bugged out of my head. Later I came back watch to the game and right as I sat down they ran an interception back for a touchdown.
Then my head exploded.

11/13/2006 01:43 pm Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the NOSE TACKLE making an interception.

11/13/2006 03:48 pm And how about the fat fullback taking one home from 32 yards? That's just crazy against a defense as fast as FSU's.

11/14/2006 10:51 am I'm still in disbelief and I'm a longtime fan and season ticket holder! I'm so happy for those kids. I never drank the Kool-Aid on Grobe's 5-year plan but it really seems to have worked. We've lost the QB we all expected big things from, the RB we counted on, and out defensive stars are fighting injury. But the backups stepped in and executed the system well enough to win, and win, and win. When will it stop!? I think we've stopped holding our breath in the stadium that the wheels are going to come off on the next play. But we surely hope for one more possession, quarter, game, week where these kids can hold their heads high and enjoy this success. These seniors came to a much differnt program than the one they've created. Overcoming the legacy of the WF football program is impossible to quantify but I think we can all appreciate it. The BC victory was an absolute catharsis for every fan in the stadium. I've never seen the field rushed at Groves! Fifteen minutes after the game there were people posing for pictures at center field or with the score board in the backgroud and little kids playing a pickup game near the end zone. The Deacon community celebrated together and it was an unforgetable time. The FSU game was some unexpected gravy; it looked like we showed up with 22 Rudy's at times. Now VT comes to town. This is usually the game where 50% of the season ticket holders sell their ticket to a rabid VT fan and recoup half the cost of the season ticket. Not this weekend. I can't wait for gametime and I can't remember feeling this way about a WF Football game since 1979.
