Davis Deal Done (For Real This Time)

The charade is over. The worst kept secret in college football is no longer. Butch Davis will be North Carolina's next football coach.

I understand as part of his compensation package, he doesn't have to watch the Tar Heels' final two games. That might have been a dealbreaker.

Urgh. I really hope you're right, Dave, and Davis is overrated; but I fear I'm right and he's not. However you slice it, Baddour looks like a genius right now for pulling the trigger mid-season and getting what amounted to an exclusive negotiating window with Davis, who otherwise would have had a lot of schools throwing themselves at him.

Why all the hate, Dave? This head coaching hire is exactly what was needed not for UNC, but for the ACC. So far, the league needs to pull itself together after being embarrased this year, and an influx of good college coaches will do that.

Not sure where you see any hate. I didn't get any digs in at Butch Davis in this post.

In a previous one, or maybe in comments, I questioned whether he's really a sure thing or not. I stand by that. He's proven little, only that he can win at Miami. And even there, he didn't stay long enough to prove that he could do it year in, year out.

Nonetheless, I think it's an outstanding hire by Dick Baddour. I think Dickie saved his job. There aren't too many sure things who would take the UNC job, so Butch Davis is the next best thing. He was probably the juciest name available, so that's quite impressive.

Well, at the very least, their coach searching was handled much better than NC State's.

Definitely, or at least it was more successful.

Either way, adding Davis is a nice boon for the conference. The ACC desperately needs some better coaching.

Well, ESPN says Jeff Bowden is out, so at least one school will get a coordinator upgrade soon.

Yeah, I was commenting on the previous articles/posts, but I think that everyone can agree that UNC couldn't land a coach this year that was significantly better than Butch Davis. Baddour learned from his previous hiring flops and this catch really redeemed him.

Now, I'm not thinking that we can run rampant through the ACC next season on route to a BCS bowl (unlike other members of the UNC faithful). The few things I want in the next two to three years are winning seasons, bowl bids, and dominance of NC State.

True, Butch might not be the next Mack Brown, but he sure as hell isn't the next Carl Torbush/John Bunting. Right now, that's all I care about.

No doubt. He's absolutely the best hire since Mack Brown by a long shot.
