Wake Forest!!

Holy crap! I never thought I'd live to see the day when Wake Forest was named ACC Football Champion. Hell, I never thought about it period, especially not in a conference with Florida State, Miami and Virginia Tech. I mean, are you kidding me? Wake Forest? It's just crazy. Keep your eye out for clouds of locusts or wildmen on horseback.

In keeping with the rest of the ACC season, Wake's 9-6 victory over Georgia Tech in Dr. Pepper ACC Championship was horrendously ugly. 60 minutes, five field goals. As written at Deadspin - "Somewhere, Mr. Pibb is laughing his ass off." This was no ESPN Instant Classic. It was an instant "Delete This Program" choice on the TiVo. That game had no alibi; it was ugly. Unless, of course, you're a Wake Forest fan like myself. Come to think of it, I bet just about all of the ACC was rooting for the Deacons today. I've never heard so many positive comments about a team that just beat you as I heard this year about Wake. It seemed that every vanquished fan base just quietly jumped about the Deacon wagon. They were like Alexander rolling through Persia. They conquered you and then enlisted you.

Will Wake get destroyed by Louisville in the Orange Bowl? Probably. But so what, it's Wake Forest in the freaking Orange Bowl! I need to type that again. Wake Forest is going to play in the Orange Bowl. The mind reels.

Go Deacs!

My "jackets" couldn't have been less impressive--unless, of course, Reggie played every position. Who the heck was he throwing to? Maybe he was just throwing the game? Ah--no--he looked just as bad against UNC, Georgia, etc. There is a silver lining--Tech has a new QB next year--and he is supposed to be good. Now--that would be achange.

I thought about writing about just how bad Ball was (is), but decided not to take away from Wake's win. I think it's interesting to point out that Ball went 9-33 yesterday, with 8 of those receptions to Calvin Johnson. Can you imagine what kind of career numbers Johnson would have had with a good QB?

(Preface: I want a 12/10 team, college football playoff that uses the BCS system to determine the seeds. I do not understand any reason why D-I college football doesn't already do this, except for the obvious 'greed' factor.)

I really, really wanted Michigan-Ohio St. for the Nat. Championship. You have the top two teams in the country, whom happen to have a legendary rivalry, playing for eternal bragging rights and a national championship to go with it. What could be better than that? However, Florida deserved to go, by escaping the SEC with only one loss and playing that extra 13th game. I only hope that Ohio State and Michigan destroy UF and USC, respectively, and prove (yet again) how ludicris the current system is to put pressure on a playoff system.

That being said, there's nothing that angered me more than when Barry Alvarez and *generic FOX announcer* argued that the regular season is, in fact, one long playoff system. If you're going to defend the system, at least come up with a better arguement than that.

*steps off soapbox*

I think all the other ACC teams wanted Wake Forest to win because they give all the non-ACC powerhouses hope that they can pull off a 'Wake Forest', and because they generally were a classy football team on the field (I think. I hardly watched any ACC football this year.)

There was a national championship semi-final this year, and Michigan lost it. They had their chance, they blew it. Bring on UF. I don't see why those of us in the other 48 states should be forced to watch OSU cream Michigan again. (That was the least tense + entertaining 3 point game I've ever seen.)

(Or to put it another way: when the best two teams face off in the FF semis, as they have a great number of years, no one says 'you know what? those two teams should really play again Monday.' That is how it is, you deal with the blowout on Monday night, give that team the title, and move on.)

Acc Football is woefully bad. UNC went 11-1 and finished in the top ten several times and the best they ever got was a Gator bowl invite. Kudos to Wake, but don't take it too seriously and just thank the Lord that they are not playing a team of at least the caliber of Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, or it could get really ugly.

Seriously. Ohio State would beat Wake Forest by at least 40 points.

I never thought this day would come. Like Dave, I really never thought about it. I thought the key to victory over GT would be putting consistent pressure on Ball. They did and even Calvin Johnson couldn't save them. And if the Deacs are to be judged on one game this season the ACC Championship was as good as any. It's rarely been pretty - It's always been smart - The kids never quit. Nothing could make me more proud as a fan. The team made the most of every opportunity. Wake in the Orange Bowl. I promise it seems just as strange to me.

Louisville enjoys fabulous coaching and a very talented team. The optimistic side of me says they had a very hard time stopping the run against Rutgers and Wake will hopefully have a healthy backfield by then (minus Micah Andrews of course). But the realistic side says that this could easily end in a 40-point loss.

On the BCS: Why isn't UF getting any love!? The SEC is a much tougher conference than the Big 10 top-to-bottom. OSU and Michigan are loaded with talent but they haven't been tested like UF has been this season. I for one think this will be a great game.
