Filtering Out Vitale!
Considering his love of Duke, this is probably a bit ironic, but the guys at the Duke Basketball Report have done humanity a great service. They have posted tips on how to watch a college basketball game on ESPN with sound, but without Dick Vitale. The catch is that you have to have to have a surround-sound system and be watching a broadcast that has the sound in 5.1 surround sound. As they mention, that might require HD.
If there were ever a good argument to give the wife for why you just have to have HD and surround sound in the family room, this is it!

I have liked Vitale ok but over the years he rants more and
more about fouls called or not called when he can't
see with one eye at all, and is apparent;ly neaqr-bllind
in the other.

Oh, I know. How could you? But still, the perception is that he's on your side.
Oh, no, the reality is that he's on our side. Well, sort of. He is possibly an insidious anti-Duke double-agent- just like how hearing Ann Coulter talk about the wonders of capitalism makes you want to become a communist, or how hearing Al Gore talking about the environment makes you want to club a baby seal, hearing Dicky V talk about 1500-SAT scoring Duke students makes me want to hurt myself. So I can only imagine what it does to other people.
Most of us long-time Duke fans who have some connection to the school can't stand him. I mean, it's fun to lift him up and pass him around in the student section of Cameron when you're there and all. But when watching a game you just want someone smarter than you are talking about it. You don't need Dick spouting obvious truths about how awesome your basketball program is.
Anyway, in case you haven't watched him in the last 20 years, he kind of likes Carolina, too. So it's not as if UNC fans constitute the most slighted grievance group here.

Absolutely. I think his love dimmed a bit when Dean (THE MICHELANGELO!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!!) retired, but of course he still talks them up. More than anything, Vitale is a frontrunner.
Still, Duke is his favorite. I think a lot of it (and I realized this last night while watching the games) comes from his work with Krzyzewski on the V Foundation. I think Vitale and K are both on the board and do a lot together. Vitale's not one to try to downplay a friendship.
All that said, I think the guy's mostly harmless (unless you count making millions absolutely hate Duke), but all things considered, I'd rather not have to listen to him. As mentioned in another thread, I'd love to have Brad Daugherty back doing games instead of NASCAR.
Vitale is simply awful -- a walking cliche. I refuse to listen to him,
even when he's raving about my favorite team. About ten years ago I wrote a letter to the network he was pimping for (can't remember if it was ESPN, CBS -- it was one of the "big boys") begging them to fire him and hire someone who would add something beyond the painfully obvious
to their broadcasts. 'Still waiting for their response.
