StateFans Bubbling Over

This StateFans Nation piece on the NCAA Tournament selection process is so lengthy and thorough that I just don't know what to say about it.

They make some excellent points, but leave a lot of the conclusions, particularly applying this piece to current ACC teams, as an exercise for the reader.

One point they made that relates to my post from yesterday. As I pointed out, there are currently nine ACC teams with bubble-worthy (at least) resumes. StateFans points out that ACC Tournament games seem to be weighted very heavily in judging ACC bubble teams. Well, with 12 ACC teams, at least three of those nine eligible squads are going to lose in the first round. It's like an automatic limiting factor. I'd bet that you'll see at least one ACC team throw away an NCAA bid by losing on that first Thursday of the ACC Tourney.

Under the current ACC tournament structure, only one of those nine bubble-worthy teams is guaranteed a loss without at least one tournament win since the bottom eight play on Thursday with the winners taking on the top four on Friday.

I hope that a 1-1 tournament record doesn't cost an otherwise worthy team its NCAA bid (recognizing that one or more of the top 9 could play itself out of contention before the torunament).

Well, besides UNC and Duke, there are no absolute locks from the ACC. The fact that there are eight (!!!) bubble teams absolutely boggles my mind. I just wonder what the least these teams have to do to in order to secure a bid to the NCAA tournament, from Boston College down to Georgia Tech or (gulp) N.C. State.

Wow. If N.C. State gets to .500 in ACC standings, Sidney Lowe should unanimously win ACC COY and be a finalist for NCOY, because that team should be deep, deep in the cellar of the ACC.
