ACC Video Of The Day

This one comes courtesy of StateFans Nation. They have a piece up about what they call "The worst call in NCAA Tournament history," when Rick Hartzell whistled Chis Corchianni for a phantom traveling violation. The video they include is pretty damn conclusive - no travel. Not even close. It wasn't even one of those times where a guy takes long, awkward strides that looks like a travel until you see the replay. No, this one looked legit the first time and everytime thereafter.

Of course, you already know my feelings about Rick Hartzell.

One sidenote about this game is that it marked Jim Valvano's last NCAA Tournament game. The NCAA placed the Wolfpack on probation for the 1990 and 1991 seasons, barring them from postseason play. Valvano was fired in March of 1990, leading to a decade-long slump for NC State basketball.

Interesting attempt by that guy to turn the story into an anti-Duke screed. Did that guy really think that keeping #1 Georgetown alive in the tournament was something that Duke would have considered favorable?

but i guess we're dealing with a fanbase that thought it was getting Tubby or Barnes last year...

In fairness, they did almost get Barnes last year. It was very close.

I think it was Virginia who thought they could get Tubby the year before. And if they tried again now they probably could get him and Kentucky fans would help him pack!

State was also *thisclose* to grabbing Calipari, but I don't think they were in the running for Tubby.

the saddest part of the story is the point you alluded to in that the following 15 years after Valvano was asked to leave that the wolfpack brass let one of the most storied programs in history slip away into a faint and distant memory. its just sad what has happened in raleigh

and if you were barnes would you have left Durant???? that kid is a once in a lifetime kind of player for a coach to be able to land

I think Rick Barnes made the right choice, but not because of Durant. He had no way to know that the kid would be this good. I think it was a good call because Texas has all the resources in the world and plays in a reputable, but eminently easier conference. He should be able to build a consistent power in Austin.

That can be done at NC State too, of course, but it's a whole lot tougher when you have Duke and Carolina so close.

A correction to the story: State was not barred from postseason play in 1991, only 1990. The 1991 team with Corchiani, Monroe, and Gugliotta played in the NCAA Tournament (under Les Robinson) and lost in the 2nd round to Oklahoma St.

I'm nearly positive I recently read that it was two years, but you're right, they played in '91. Was it later amended?

I believe State was under "probation" for 2-3 years, but they were only barred from the NCAA's in 1990. The probation restricted some recruiting, scholarships were limited, etc. Robinson had to deal with these restrictions (academic too) for atleast his first year and possibly his second.
