I called to wish my dad a happy 83rd birthday tonight, and he asked me what I thought about Bobby Cremins taking over the job at College of Charleston. Because of his advancing years, I thought he was just confused and said, "No dad, Greg Marshall is taking the job..." But, after getting onliine for a few minutes, I realized he was probably thinking the same thing about me!

gives some insight about Herrion's dismissal, and there will surely be more to come about Marshall "pulling a Cremins" (told SC he would take the job but remained at Georgia Tech) on C of C. Looks like the mid-majors are just as susceptible to all manner of problems as the big boys. _________________ I think this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture, be done on somebody's part! Yeah, given his apparent success on Gillen's staff, I figured that Tom Herrion would do well at CofC. I guess not.
The Gregg Marshall part of the story is just odd. It has happened in the past of course, with Bobby Cremins the chief example, but to reneg on a job to return to Winthrop? Winthrop? The College of Charleston isn't quite the big time, but it's a lot closer than Winthrop is.
Frankly, I never understood why NC State didn't go after him. I doubt he would have changed his mind about that job. |

Whoa, Bobby Cremins was hired at College of Charleston? I didn't realize that when I wrote that post above! I thought you were just joking about Marshall's Cremins-like change of heart.

What an odd turn of events to get spurned by a coach and then choose the coach most famous for spurning another school - a school in your same state, no less.
Truth is stranger than fiction. |

To use an analogy from my current career, there are great assistant principals who make lousy principals. Or. to use a movie title, Herrion went "A Bridge Too Far." It's odd, because it's usually the Matt Dohertys, Tom Amakers, and Quin Snyders who go too far too fast and get shown the door. Herrion was on a much more deliberate pace. It sounds like he didn't make the transition from being in charge of a few things to being in charge of everything. Maybe C of C also noted the beginnings of a Gillenesque slide...
At present, Winthrop has better facilities than C of C, and recently, the automatic conference bid to the tournament has been automatically theirs. However, C of C apparently is willing to spend around one million bucks to buy out one coach and hire a new one, so they've got some serious money somewhere. Note to C of C students--your student activities fee will probably be increasing faster than the price of imported oil!
One creepy thing that came up in all the articles about Herrion and Marshall was the influence that RETIRED coach Kresse still has around C of C. Perhaps the Cremins hire is a subtle hint that "That was then, this is now." Of course, that will be tough given that they plan to name a new building after Kresse... |

Ooops--must have timed out. I was looking for an appropriate Big Jim folsom quote... It goes, "Well kiss my a** and call it... something something something...." Anyway, the comment above is mine. _________________ I think this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture, be done on somebody's part! And we're just the guys to do it! |
