Excerpt: It's been nearly a month since I did this, so I'll be brief on a lot of the older games. Saturday, Jan. 13 N.C. State 88, Wake 74 At the time, this was one of the most surprising results of...

http://www.electric-mayhem.net/blog/2007/01/if-you-were-watching-duke-clemson-game.html

I'm somewhere between you and the Prof. It is a bit much to expect a game to be replayed because of an officiating error, but the officials should be given more leeway to correct errors made during play. In the recent Clemson game, and the Virginia-Duke game from 1997 that also ended with a timekeeping error, the officials made half-assed corrections that only compounded the problem. The officials should be given more leeway to ensure that the integrity of the contest remains absolute.

In the Clemson game, I think the timekeeper knew the clock had started late and was trying to "fix" it by letting the clock run long. Similarly, in the 1997 Virginia game, the timekeeper blew the horn for several seconds, then started the clock late. In both cases the referees "fixed" the errors in a fashion that (coincidentally?) gave Duke an unfair advantage.

Whoa, whoa, whoa Dave. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here about the Tar Heels NCAA chances. They're still in the upper echelon of basketball clubs this year (Along with Florida, UCLA, Wisconsin, tOSU, Kansas, Texas A&M, Pitt) and I'm not sure how many teams could have beaten N.C. State on that day. Besides, how many teams have tried to play the Heels tough and got blown out? I think UNC's problem is their streaky outside shooting; if Ellington/Terry/Wes Miller starts hitting threes, few teams could beat us.

However, I'm the most impressed with BC. I thought that they would tank hard, yet they've put together a nice streak recently.

I'm not saying they will get upset, I just don't think they are a slam dunk. This team is one year away, imho.

Ahh..alright. I'll agree with you since the only team that is, right now, a slam dunk is *sigh* Florida. I can't think of a weakness on that team besides their bench, but that's such a minor thing in the NCAA tournament (unless if they get an injury, then they're in BIG trouble).

Afraid I've got another little bit of a threadjack here, but I found the following outrageously funny and it does involve former ACC players (a Heel and a Cav):

That's good stuff. I had NO IDEA that Roger Mason Jr was on the Wiz. I assumed he was in Turkey or somewhere.

Oh, if only Roger had remembered some of Brendan's fantastic NCAA Tournament work. Like 1 point and 0 rebounds against Weber Freaking State.

Yeah, I saw Roger Mason Jr. when he played for Hapoel Jerusalem with Mario Austin. They had a really good team that year, too.

Dave: in light of GT's (ugly) win over UConn today, what does the ACC-Big East ledger now read? 5-9 or something like that? Hopefully Duke can beat St. John's in MSG in the last regular season game between the two conferences -- that'd make it at least possible for the ACC to reach .500 with meetings in the NCAA Tournament.

I was wondering that myself.

...

The ACC says you are right. So it's 6-9 now. And that was a huge win for GT. UConn may not be a great team (man, they are one ugly offensive squad!), but they are solid and Tech needs all the good wins they can get.

It's a win GT needed, but to paraphrase Billy Packer: there's some bad basketball played there by both teams. GT still has no clue what good ball movement entails: their superb athletes were able to make a bunch of circus baskets, but if they knew what to do to get a good shot, they wouldn't even have needed those. As for UConn... man, they don't even have anyone who can catch an entry pass, much less get a good-looking shot off.

Also, I think the Jackets still don't have a true road win (they got two wins on a neutral floor in Maui before UCLA smashed them)... when's the last time an ACC team got into the Tourney with zero road wins?

No question. It was some ugly basketball. But UConn is a name team. Sure, the selection committee will look at stats, but they are humans and a win over UConn just sounds good. But yeah, Tech is going to need to win a road game at some point.

Maryland will win the ACC if they play the way the same way as when they beat UNC.
